“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

If anyone knows me, they know I am a huge fanatic of music. Ask anyone who knows me….go ahead, I challenge you. I promise they will say “that brother loves him some music”.
I try to incorporate it into every aspect of my daily routine…writing, driving, eating, walking, showering, sleeping, reading etc. Because my interests covers just about the whole damn spectrum, I don’t limit myself to listening to just one genre.
You have to understand, I grew up with music being a huge part of my life. Basically I almost had no choice, it was in the family bloodline thanks to my grandfather (he composed, played piano and saxophone), my mother (acousitc guitar) and my cousins and I had a band growing up (I played saxophone, percussion and vocals).
Quite simply, I find the medium of music incredibly intoxicating and empowering. Always have, always will. If you relate to what I’m saying, then we are kindred spirits all the way baby.
On redefining concise from time to time, I will announce new additions to my playlist. This is a playlist I’ve created on YouTube of music in the form of videos that I predominantly listen to while I write. YouTube is one of the largest video databases on the web. Of the 120,000,000+ videos on YouTube, roughly 20% is music videos. The best thing about it is there is no charge to access this medium. Anyone can create an account on YouTube, set up a playlist and have a world of music from here to infinity of any genre, old and current at their fingertips.
Just recently, I’ve made some adjustments to my playlist I created for listening to while I write. This playlist I simply entitled “chill”. This playlist consist of soothing Mediterranean, European and soothing Buddha Bar melodies.
The real reason I established a music playlist on YouTube was driven by three factors, economic, variety and convenience. The fact that I could listen to music at no charge (it represents a considerable cost savings over iTunes or a $12.95/mo online satellite radio subscription), the endless variety and the fact I could listen to songs right while I am at my computer online was extremely attractive to me. Another bonus was the fact I did not need to upload or download anything.
Here Is How I Started My Music Playlist
- I signed up for a free YouTube account. This process is really quite simple. Just complete the pertinent information and follow the additional prompts and you’re done in less than 5 minutes.
- I created and named a playlist. Once I set up my account, I signed in and created/named a playlist for the type of music I wanted it to include. I created this “new” playlist in the “my videos” section. I repeated this process for any other types of music I desired. Here are a few more ways to create a playlist.
- I searched for my interests. After my playlist was set up, I went searching in the YouTube search bar for different types of music I desired.
- I perused the search results. Just like any other search engine, YouTube populates all related results. For example on my “chill” playlist I wanted to include a compilation of lounge, chill-out, world music made famous by the Buddha Bar brand. My search term was “buddha bar”. From there I had the pick of the litter. Every video I sampled and liked I used the “add to playlist” button below the video to add it to my “chill” playlist.
- I repeat. I repeated this search and add process for all other playlists.
- I listen: All I have to do to start listening to the music video I saved in each playlist I’ve set up is to simply drill down from my username at the top of the page and click “my videos”. I prefer to listen to every music video by selecting the “play all” option.
Maintenance of my playlist involves more of addition than subtraction. I will usually add a few songs a week. Funny thing is, I don’t ever recall removing a song. I suppose I keep it on the list for the eventuality of me falling in love with it again…which has been known to happen.
If you are looking for an instant endless variety of music without the hassle of buying and downloading it from iTunes or the expense of purchasing CD’s or a satellite radio online subscription and you have a very broad taste like me, then feel free to copy what I’ve done and create a YouTube playlist for your listening pleasure. I guarantee you will find at least five songs you enjoy that you never knew existed.
So what the heck are you waiting for, create your playlist and do like I do, don your favorite headphones and get into the zone. Accept it, enjoy it. Nirvana let me tell ya.
