Spend time together and still be frugal

I can remember our first date like it was yesterday….OK, maybe the day before yesterday (smile) with the woman who is now my wife.
We spent that time at a Red Lobster Seafood restaurant…the choice was hers.
Not wanting to disappoint and with intentions only to impress I happily obliged. The problem was, I spent money I really didn’t have as a young adult.
In hindsight, what we should have done was indulge in a meal over a picnic basket. I would have been more inclined to spring for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
I know you probably think I’m cheap bastard don’t you? But seriously, at that time I was flat broke.
Dates should not necessarily have to be expensive for it to be a good one. There are many less expensive activities that you can go into with your date and still have a great time together. Who knows, you could quite possibly be destined to become the next cloud nine couple enjoying abundant love and life.
Keep in mind that the whole point of dates is not about how much you spend, but how much you get to know the person that you are with.
Here are 5 of the best all-time cheap but great dates you can enjoy if you are in a jam financially:
Watch a Movie – at Home - Watching a movie is probably the most basic form of date that you and your partner can enjoy. However, it is not necessary to travel to a movie theater to enjoy a movie together. Rent movies instead or buy DVDs and watch it in the comforts of your own home.
You don’t have to bring your date to the movies, but instead, bring the movie to your date. At least in this way, you can actually determine what movie to watch and you can watch it with just the two of you in the room. You don’t have to worry about those annoying people who talk loudly in movie theaters, as they can greatly put a damper on your date quickly.
Star Gaze - Another cheaper alternative for a date is you can simply invite your partner to go on a star gazing date with you. All you need for this date is a blanket, some hot chocolate and the night sky and you can already have a great date out of it. You don’t have to spend much on this date, as the most expensive thing would probably be the hot chocolate
“When I consider how, after sunset, the stars come out gradually in troops from behind the hills and woods, I confess that I could not have contrived a more curious and inspiring sight.” ~Henry David Thoreau
However, this should not limit you to simply bringing hot chocolate to the date. You might want to consider bringing something to eat as well. Also, don’t forget to bring some bug spray, as bugs can be a problem when you are out.
Picnic in the Park - Instead of eating in an expensive restaurant, simply bring your date to a nice park or a secluded location with a nice view for a picnic lunch. Just pack a nice spread for you and your date and pick a nice location where you can spend the time eating and lounging together. Bring along some sexy dessert, such as strawberries dipped in chocolate, as well as some fine music to help you set the mood.
Go Swim at the Beach - Another less expensive date that you can bring your partner to is on a beach. All you need is your swimwear and gear, some sun screen lotion and you are all set. Of course, you might need to spend some money on food and drinks, as swimming and snorkeling can be a very tiring and physically demanding activity, one that can definitely work up your appetite.
If swimming isn’t your thing, simply explore the beach and collect shells and driftwood and you can even make a game out of it.
Strolls and Walks - Another cheap but great date that you can do is simply ask your date to go on a walk or stroll with you. Use this quality time to get to know your date.
“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
However, you need to plan this type of date ahead, especially since simply walking and strolling anywhere is not necessarily a great date. Choose the route and the location where you want to do your walk. Make sure that there are a couple of nice views and landmarks that you could see to help set a romantic mood. Keep in mind that although you and your date are simply walking, you still need to make the walk more special and meaningful to make it a great date, so plan well.
Do you have any “first date” venue experiences you wished you would have done differently? Were you in a bind for “cold hard cash” but you splurged anyway? I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments.

LOL…… Great blog post Kevin! Really got into it!
I had a combo of your dates here, we packed the picnic an headed to an outdoor movie & dined under the stars!
It was incredible. I don’t believe you need to spend a huge amount of money to impress. In fact the more thought one puts into it, the more romantic and telling of the person your on the date with.
Thanks for sharing!
Great post Kevin!
You really don’t have to spend a fortune to have a great time. Sadly, I had one of those first date experiences last year where I just casually said, “alright, you can pay for dinner and I’ll take care of drinks afterwards.” My date turned out to be a serious wine connoisseur and trained taster and when I got the bill, I just kept a poker face (but wanted to cry because it was the size of my business marketing budget for the entire month). I learned my lesson.
